Thinking About Going Gray? Preview Silver Hair Before You Stop Dyeing
Many people decide at some point to stop coloring their hair and let it go gray. It saves time and money, and plenty of people love how silver looks. The hard part is the decision itself: you cannot see the finished result until months of growing out are behind you. A preview gives you an idea of that result on day one.
See the Result First
Silver gray on your own photo answers the big question: do you like yourself with gray hair? A cool, light shade such as ash blonde is worth comparing too. Many colorists use light, cool tones to blend gray during the transition, so an Ash blonde preview gives an idea of a gentler halfway stage, even though real blending is done with highlights rather than one all-over color.
Ways to Transition to Gray
- Grow it out: stop coloring and let the gray grow in. It is the simplest route, but the line between dyed and natural hair stays visible for a long time
- Cut it short: a shorter cut removes much of the dyed length at once, so the transition is quicker
- Blend it: highlights or lowlights soften the line between dyed hair and natural gray while it grows
- Lift the color out: a colorist can lighten the dyed lengths closer to your natural gray, which works better on some hair than others
How Long Does It Take?
Hair grows roughly one centimeter (about half an inch) a month. A short cut can be fully gray within a few months; shoulder-length hair can take two years or more to grow out completely. That is a long time to wait to find out whether you like the result, which is why seeing it first helps.
Caring for Gray Hair
- Gray and white hair can pick up a yellow tinge from sun, pollution or hard water; a purple shampoo now and then can help keep it bright
- Gray hair can feel drier or coarser, so a moisturizing conditioner and an occasional mask can help
- A clear gloss adds shine, which can make silver look intentional rather than faded
- A fresh, well-shaped cut matters more with gray hair, because the color is no longer doing the work
Gray Hair and Your Wardrobe
A big hair color change can change which clothes you reach for. Many people find that silver hair works well with clear, cool or saturated colors such as navy, emerald, berry and crisp white, while some warm, muted shades start to look flatter. Treat this as a starting point. Once you have a preview you like, you can try outfits on the same photo and see which colors you prefer.
How to Preview It
Sign in to FitInView (a free account is enough), open Hair Color, add a clear photo of yourself and pick one of ten shades. The result appears next to your original with a before/after slider, and it is saved under "Your hair colors", where you can compare shades and download them. Your first Quick preview is covered by the starter credits you get with a free account; HD and 4K versions use more credits. Only the color changes: your cut, length, parting and texture stay as they are.
